A little clarity. A little calm.

A dai kam je and a tea ceremony full of familiar affection

Make space for both families’ wishes, with clear names, roles and a thoughtful sequence.

Offering tea can hold the thanks that everyday conversation rarely quite reaches. Begin with the traditions each family treasures, then talk with your dai kam je about an arrangement that feels right for you. The Hong Kong Family and Women Information Portal describes how some customs are simplified today and how tea-serving order can differ between families. An online checklist is a starting point for a conversation.

For your first meeting, bring the proposed rituals, locations, timing and guest numbers. Ask which parts are included, when the dai kam je arrives and leaves, whether preparation advice is included and who supplies each item. If gift-giving, hair-combing, tea ceremonies and departure rituals happen on different dates or at different places, confirm each part and its cost individually.

Prepare names, forms of address, pronunciations and the agreed tea-serving order. Check privately whether any relatives need seating, mobility assistance or other consideration. Allocate tea preparation, refills, passing and collecting cups, and looking after gifts. Ask the responsible people to check that the tea is comfortable to drink and that walking areas stay dry. Share sensitive family circumstances only with those who need to know.

Agree where the dai kam je, MC and coordinator each take the lead, who alerts the photographer and who watches the timing. Identify what can be adjusted if the morning runs late. Every moment of a wedding day deserves care. A little clarity beforehand can prevent avoidable misunderstandings and give both families more space to offer their blessings.

A family-wishes worksheet: start with your own traditions

Backgrounds such as Hong Kong boat-dwelling (水上人), Chiu Chow and Fujian families can be a starting point for understanding customs. Families with similar backgrounds may still treasure different arrangements. Ask the couple and both sets of parents about their actual wishes, then check the plan with the dai kam je, MC and coordinator.

Copy these fields, discuss them with each family, then bring the answers into one agreed version:

  • Moments that matter: rituals to keep and parts you are happy to discuss simplifying: ________________
  • Names and order: who confirms family titles, pronunciation and tea-serving order, and when: ________________
  • Items and places: what both families agree to prepare, who brings it, where and when it is handed over: ________________
  • Roles on the day: who speaks, guides relatives, passes tea and keeps gifts; who alerts the camera team and next activity: ________________
  • Changes: if timing slips or a new wish arises, who checks with the couple and both families before updating the teams: ________________

Share private family circumstances only with the relevant person; the common checklist needs the practical arrangement. Once names are agreed, explore tea-ceremony blessings. For wishes that differ, read the notes on discussing traditions with your family.

One small place to begin

Ask each family which traditions matter most, then prepare one tea-ceremony list covering names, order, items and responsibilities.
